The Kennel
Kennel Inlicio is planning a small scale breeding of Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, most commonly known as Toller. In our breeding we focus on good health, good mentality and strong work drive.

Our dogs are first and foremost beloved family members and training partners. Being together with them will always be the most important thing for us. But we also wish to contribute to a positive development of the breed and will therefore have litters when we have dogs that fulfil our requirements for breeding. We will never be a large scale breeder but prefer to think quality before quantity, with close follow-up of all our puppies.

We thought about a good kennel name for quite a while, and many more or less appropriate alternatives were suggested. We wanted a name that reflect the uniqueness of the Toller and its characteristics as a gundog. Our kennel name, Inlicio, is the Latin word for entice, allure, attract, seduce and acting decoy. Words that describe well the behaviour of a Toller when it attracts the ducks during tolling.

We follow the guidelines of the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) and the Norwegian Retriever Club (NRK) in our breeding, as a minimum.

Breeding goals
Our overarching goal is to breed physically healthy dogs with strong mind and strong work drive that are suitable for hunting, utility, tracking, obedience or agility, as well as being well adapted family members. The kind of dog we want ourselves!

Physical health
For a dog to be physically healthy is obviously very important. A sound body is fundamental for all beings. Some illnesses are possible to prevent through genetic testing while others are unpredictable and can befall dogs even after the most careful planning. No one can ever guarantee a perfectly healthy dog, but we try our best. We put a lot of emphasis on health when we choose parents, and look not only at the health of the chosen individuals but also their relatives.

  • The parental dogs used at kennel Inlicio are x-rayed clear on hips and elbows (if done) and has been eye examined clear within a year before mating. At least one of the parents will be Clear (A) for prcd-PRA and CEA/CH. The dogs are generally healthy and fit.

Mentality
To have a sound and strong mind is just as important as being physically healthy. An adult Toller should be a curious and lively dog that happily and confidently deals with its surroundings. A dog that works well in everyday life and in the family as well as on training, on competitions and when hunting. This is the kind of dog we aspire to breed.

  • Both parents will be balanced and well functioning dogs. At least one of the parents will have gone through a mental assessment. We also want the puppy buyers to participate in a mental assessment (MH) of the whole litter when they are 15-24 months old. We regard this as a very important tool to evaluate the litter and our breeding.

Work drive
A Toller is an active dog that enjoys life the most when it is working with both body and mind. We want Toller’s with a "big engine" and a distinct desire to work, who never refuses a training or hunt and lasts longer than you do. But it is also very important that they can relax after the work is done and enjoy life on the couch in a true retriever-way!

  • At least one of the parents will have working merits within hunting, utility or obedience, both are secure at gun shot and have lots of work drive.

Exterior
When it comes to looks, we consider it most important to have a dog with a functional exterior. Considering the Toller’s origin as hunting dog one realizes that it has to be quite an average dog. To withstand long days of working in heavy and wet terrain it can’t be too heavy or to light in body. Nor can it be too large as it is supposed to mimic a fox, or too small as it has to be able to manage it’s job as retriever. It can’t have too much coat as that will take time to dry and things will stick to it, nor can it have too little as it would freeze when working in cold water. It should have enough angulations to avoid unnecessary strain on the body as it is very active, and have free movements. Does it sound easy? It isn’t. Our goal is for the dog to function for its purpose in a well constructed body.

  • The parents should have been shown officially with minimum a Very Good. We wish our puppy buyers to show their dog at least once on an official show after two years of age. If you can’t or do not want to do this on your own, we gladly prepare and show the dog for you.

Adopting a puppy
It is a prerequisite that you are well aware what it means to adopt a puppy in general, and a toller-puppy in particular. A toller is not a breed for everyone.

Buying and selling a pup is a matter of trust. You trust us to know the parents, to have given serious consideration to the match in all aspects and that we have given the pup the best terms possible for a good start in life. We trust you to give the pup a lifelong, loving home. That you will provide food, medical care and training as needed and that you stay in touch to let us know how things are going.

We are commited to you with guidance and support throughout the dog's lifetime. No questions are stupid and the hour never too late for a call. Even if we might not have all the answers, we have many good friends with extensive knowledge about dogs, both in everyday life and training.

We put a lot of effort into training and qualifying our own dogs, something that gives us great pleasure and rewarding time together. We also look for strong workdrive in the parental dogs in our breeding, after a strong mind and good health, and expect to breed puppies who also have a strong workdrive. We therefore only place our puppies in active homes.

If you want a pup from us you should be interested in working with your dog. Hunting or utlity work are activities that lie close to our hearts, but the toller is a versatile dog who will love to work with you in any kind of action, as long as it gets to use its mind and body!

You do not need to be an experienced dog person, but you have to be willing invest quite a lot of time to work with you toller, and be willing to try different activities. It will be a rewarding experience, we promise! You will see the happieness that radiates from a toller that gets to work with body and mind and along with this you will get a fantastic friend.

If you are looking for a toller as a pure familiy dog, we are likely not the right kennel for you.

We require our puppy buyers to:

  • Take good care of the dog and treat it as a cherished family member
  • Make sure that it gets the physical and mental stimulation a toller needs
  • Stay regularly in touch and let us know how things are going
  • Keep the dog insured
  • Participate in a mental description of the whole litter at 15-24 months
  • X-ray the hips and elbows at 15-18 months of age
  • Examine the eyes at least once during its lifelime
  • Show the dog at an official dog-show at least once after 2 years of age
  • Contact us first if you for any reason do not want to keep the dog

Send us an email where you tell us about yourself and your family. Do you have any previous experience with dogs, why did you choose the breed and why is a puppy from Inlicio suitable for you? We would like to know how you plan on arranging the arrival of a puppy in relation to work so that it won't be left alone for long periods of time in the beginning. We prefer to meet all puppy-buyers in person, so we can get to know each other. We will hopefully have contact for many years to come and it is important with the "right chemistry", for both parts.

The puppy's childhood
The puppies are born and raised in our home together with us and eventually our other dogs where they get used to everyday noises such as vacume cleaner, dishwasher, TV and work in the kitchen. They will meet humans of all ages and sizes as well as selected friendly dogs of other breeds. They are given attention daily, both as a pack as well as individually, and they will spend as much time outdoors as possible (depending on season). At an appropriate age, they will be given access to an "Adventure Park" where they get to train their senses and motoric skills on different types of ground, materials and scents. They will of course be presented to game as well as blood and legs of roe deer/deer/moose.

Puppy-buyers that want to train, compete and qualify their dogs will be prioritized. We distribute the puppies according to the plans and wishes of puppy-buyers and will try to find the best match for both. The puppies will go through a test at 6-7 weeks and after this we determine who goes where. We DO NOT send puppies alone by airplane.

The pups are ready for their new homes earliest at 8 weeks of age and will then:

  • Have a standard contract from NKK
  • Have a pedigree and be registered in NKK
  • Be ID-marked with chip
  • Be vaccinated agains parvo
  • Have been dewormed
  • Have insurance against hidden faults
  • Have a vetrinary certificate not older than 7 days
  • Have a rug with scent of mum and siblings
  • Have a bag of the same food it has eaten with while here
  • Have full comitment from us for the rest of it's life

We will arrange two trailing-courses for all puppies in each litter, the first at about 6 months and the second at 12 months (depending on season). We will also arrange at least one retrieving/hunting-course. These courses are not mandatory in any way, but we hope they will provide a great opportunity for you as an owner to learn about exciting ways to work with your puppy and of course to meet each other, both dogs and humans!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us!
